Our Verdict
At 264g (per UK6 shoe), the Hoka Speedgoat 7 Hike GTX keeps the light, cushioned feel of the standard Speedgoat while adding more protection for wetter, rougher trails.
I like that Hoka has gone further than simply adding a higher collar. The Kevlar-reinforced upper should handle abrasion better, while the GORE-TEX Invisible Fit membrane keeps the construction flexible and less bulky than a traditional waterproof boot. The padded collar adds ankle coverage without feeling like a conventional walking boot.
Underfoot, the supercritical EVA midsole keeps the ride soft and responsive, while the Vibram Megagrip outsole and 5mm lugs give plenty of bite on wet and loose ground.
The fit still runs relatively narrow through the forefoot, but the combination of low weight, cushioning and weather protection is very appealing for fastpacking and long-distance walking.
