It provides secure placements, with a stainless steel spike and tapered pick. The head design and curved shaft provide comfortable grip whether you're in piolet-canne position or climbing. Our Verdict
At 239g and 45cm long, the Petzl Ride is easy to carry on a rucksack and well suited to ski touring, ski mountaineering and fast winter trips. Its steel pick tapers to 3mm, giving it secure purchase in firm snow, while the curved shaft and shaped head provide a comfortable grip in both walking and dagger positions.
The short length is also its main limitation. It offers less reach and support than a conventional walking axe, particularly for taller users or on lower-angle terrain. The compact adze handles occasional snow clearing, but it is not designed for prolonged digging or step cutting.
This is a specialised choice for short, steeper sections where the axe may spend much of the day attached to your pack, rather than general winter walking.
