A lightly insulated waterproof for cold, wet days when you want warmth and rain protection in one layer.

Patagonia says:

Whether you’re seeking boulders and alpine views or stalking rainbow trout, this low-profile, waterproof jacket will keep you dry and provide rain protection from the fork in the trail to the places less traveled, and back again. This 3-layer shell meets our H2No® Performance Standard for exceptional waterproof/breathable protection, and the fabric, membrane and durable water repellent (DWR) finish are made without intentionally added PFAS. Made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory.

Our Verdict

At 617g (Medium), the Insulated Boulder Fork combines a 30D 3-layer H2No shell with 40g Thermogreen synthetic insulation and a soft, air-permeable lining. The result feels more like a waterproof jacket with a light midlayer built in than a heavily insulated winter coat.

I’m 6 ft 1 in and found the Large fitted me perfectly. The single hood adjustment works very well, cinching the hood neatly around the face, while the internal lining feels incredibly comfortable next to the skin.

There are four external pockets, although none are especially generous, and no internal pocket. My main reservation is the fixed combination of waterproofing and insulation, which narrows when I’d want to use it. I think it makes more sense for casual cold-weather use, dog walking or standing at a football match than as a dedicated hiking shell for changeable conditions.
