Our Verdict
At 528g (Medium), the Firewall Guide Pants are substantial, but the 40D 3-layer Pertex Shield construction, 20,000mm hydrostatic head and 20,000g/m²/24hr breathability make them confidence-inspiring for long days in poor winter weather.
The full-length two-way side zip makes them much easier to pull on over bulky winter boots while also giving plenty of ventilation on steeper climbs. Reinforced lower hems and crampon patches add protection where waterproof trousers are most likely to take abuse, while the articulated knees help keep movement unrestricted.
The deep tricot-lined waistband, brace attachment points and adjustable hems reinforce the feeling that these are designed to be worn for hours rather than carried just in case. They are heavy, but the extra weight is going into features that make a real difference in prolonged winter use.
