A tough down parka for cold stops

Patagonia says:

For committing climbs that require rugged insulation, the Durable Down Parka is a lofty and warm 800-fill-power down belay jacket with a two-way zipper that won’t get shredded by rock abrasion. Using materials found in our Workwear gear, it’s tough enough to withstand the burliest pitches yet light enough to haul up the longest routes. This parka is part of the Free Wall Kit. Designed to meet the demands of our ambassadors’ evolving tactics for modern rock climbing objectives, the Free Wall Kit is made for sustained, difficult multipitch routes where even the smallest rest recovers just enough energy for the send. Made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory.

Our Verdict

The Patagonia Durable Down Parka is a specialist static layer rather than a lightweight walking puffy. At 619g (Medium), it is built around warmth and durability, with 800-fill-power down protected by a tougher Ultra-PE ripstop shell.

The face fabric is the standout feature. It gives more confidence around rock and rough use than the fragile shell fabrics often found on lighter down jackets. The regular fit also makes sense, as this is designed to be pulled over other layers at belays, cold camps or exposed rest stops.

The helmet-compatible hood, high collar, and two-way front zip are climbing-focused details, while the large hand pockets and internal drop-in pockets are useful for gloves or for keeping hands warm. The lack of hem and cuff adjustment is worth noting, especially in the wind, and I admit I found this an odd omission.

Features

  • Built with a lightweight version of ultradurable face fabric used for our Workwear's Steel Forge jackets, the body fabric is high-tensile 98% recycled nylon/2% recycled polyester Ultra-PE ripstop that protects the 800-fill-power down insulation from abrasion so you can move freely even when you’re 15 pitches off the deck
  • Comfortable lining is lighter than the exterior fabric to reduce bulk for better packability; it’s also soft and quiet to help you find a pocket of calm when you’re trying hard
  • Generous hood with a high draft collar pulls easily over a helmet for total warmth; soft, elasticized binding at the hood, cuffs and hem seals out the elements
  • Two-way, center-front Vislon® zipper with two internal storm flaps that snap together at the hem makes it belay device-compatible without exposure to the elements
  • Broad shoulders and discontinuous quilting provide mobility and loft; an exterior loop at the back of the neck allows you to clip to the belay with the durable, weather-resistant shell facing outward
  • Two generous, zippered handwarmer pockets allow easy access at a hanging belay, and parka self-stuffs into the left pocket; two interior drop-in mesh pockets keep gloves or climbing shoes warm
  • Made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory, which means the people who made this product earned a premium for their labor
