Our Verdict
The Montane Dart XT Hoodie is a true cooler-weather baselayer for me. The brushed Apex Thermo fabric feels soft against the skin and provides a noticeable step up in warmth from a lightweight baselayer, while still wicking well enough for active use. At 256g (Medium), it is substantial, but that extra weight brings useful insulation for colder walking and winter layering.
I tried the Large and found the fit worked well. Previous Dart pieces could feel quite athletic, whereas this has a little more room through the body, which I think suits a warmer baselayer. The stretch keeps movement unrestricted, while the close hood and thumb loops provide welcome extra coverage when temperatures drop.
My one niggle is the bonded chest pocket. Anything substantial carried there can sit directly beneath a rucksack strap and potentially irritate, while the bonded panel also reduces breathability across that area. It is a small criticism, but I like the hoodie enough that I wish Montane had simply left the pocket off.
